About Me
I’m currently in my final year of graduate school. Along the way I’ve seen it all, and I’m ready for this rough ride to come to an end. Follow along as I look for jobs, wrestle with writing my thesis, and coming to grips with the fact that it’s actually time to enter the Real World(tm).
I’m still a bit undecided as to what I’d like to do for a career. I’m interested in the writing/editing side of scientific communication, but it’s tough finding jobs that I think I’m qualified for and would find interesting. I’ve considered doing some freelance journalism, but that idea is pretty scary as well.
I’m a scientist by training, and I have a strong personal interest in open source and liberal copyright (especially as this pertains to the pursuit of knowledge). I’m particularly interested in leveraging networks to facilitate communication amongst scientists, as well as the distribution of scientific research to the public.
About PA
Because of my interest in more accessible scientific communication and open source ideas, I wanted to create this site both to write about these issues and to showcase my own contributions.
How I chose the name
I knew that I wanted to finally do things right and get my own domain, rather than hosting a blog on a service like blogspot or as a subdomain of another site. I spent a long time just sort of kicking around ideas for domain names in my head, running them through WHOIS to see if they were available and whatnot. At some point I sort of got to thinking about web information, in the form of blogs, wikipedia, etc, and into a philosophical mindset of “how do people judge the validity of what they find”. I realized that most people probably just have some sort of “sniff test” - is the information plausible? From there it was a short jump to the phrase “Plausible Accuracy”, which I thought had a nice ring to it.
To me, it also sort of ties back into the idea of Imposter Syndrome - the feeling that no matter what I choose to write about on the blog, it’s going to be sort of fundamentally flawed just because I’ve (of course) got gaps in my knowledge and half the time am discussing things that I really don’t know as much about as I should.
